Through the use of lighting, music and interaction with performers, the show is a playful and sensitive yet dynamic sensory experience for babies, toddlers and their carers.
Having first hand experience of being mothers, we often find ourselves naming and labelling babies’ discoveries in an attempt to communicate and share the moment with them. However, we imagine what their incredible curiosity brings to their senses is often much richer than anything we can describe in words.
Through this show we explore joyful elements in life, such as love, space for dreaming and imagination and finding your own power of influencing the environment.
Inspiration for the story line comes from Japanese Haiku poems. Haiku can convey a whole universe of emotions and recognitions by using only a few words. Its often subtle and abstract language surprises by revealing a myriad of familiar yet transcending landscapes. It is this instinctual communication that we want to visualise on stage.
We have been collaborating with Dr Anna Franklin at the Sussex Baby Lab (University of Sussex) for the physiological and emotional development of infants.
The developing stage of GLOW took place during June and July 2014 and was supported by the Arts Council England, Brighton Dome and The Nightingale Theatre. GLOW premiered at Brighton Festival in 2015 followed by a national tour and is currently available for future touring.
